Rudy Giuliani made the official announcement: “I’m not running for president in 2012.”

“Wait, were you just talking to me?,” the young woman walking into the New York Times building asked him while removing her headphones.

“I was just saying that I’m not running for president,” the former NYC mayor added in higher volume. “In 2012.”

“Oh, ok… Umm, I’m actually just meeting my boyfriend for lunch,” the young woman said. “I’m not a journalist or anything.”

“Oh,” Mr. Giuliani’s responded, his smile fading. “But your boyfriend is a journalist, right?”

“Actually, he just works in the mail room,” she said, wincing in anticipation of the pain her words would undoubtedly inflict.

“Oh… Well, thanks anyway. For listening to me.” Rudy Giuliani’s shoulders slumped; his gaze slowly lowered to the sidewalk as he sat back down on the curb.

The young women started to enter the building, but stopped and turned to Mr. Giuliani, “Hey, listen, I- I’m sure I can pass the word along.”

“Really?!,” the Brooklyn-native said with an exuberance that could only be described as child-like.

“Of course! My boyfriend talks to all of the big writers here. I’m sure they’ll be falling over each other to write about your plans for 2012.”

And with that, the young woman turned and entered the building. Was it a lie? Perhaps. But even if so, it was a lie that made one old man very happy for a day.
